Question: “What do I need to know about the Canadian student visa?”

Answer:

More than 130,000 international students come to study and live in Canada each year and even more go there to learn English and French.

Before you apply for a study permit (student visa), you must have been accepted at a recognized university, school or college. And like most other international study destinations you will need to prove that you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses for you and your family who come with you, and return transport costs.

You’ll also need to prove that you don’t have a criminal record, are in ‘good health’ and satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada after your studies.

What do I need to apply for a Study Permit (IMM 1294)?

Proof of acceptance – a letter from your education provider showing confirmation of your acceptance of your course offer on official letterhead
Proof of identity – valid passport or travel document
Proof of financial support – your bank statements for the last four months, any Canadian bank accounts you might have opened, payment of tuition and residence fees or proof of scholarship payment
Studying in Quebec? You will also require a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (Quebec Certificate of Acceptance, or CAQ) issued by the Ministère de l’Immigration et des communautés culturelles (MICC) – your institution should be able to help you with this
Find your nearest Canadian visa office
Check the fee for the study permit
Take a medical – you will get instructions from your visa officer
Clear security checks

Some countries are also required to apply for a temporary resident visa as well. You can find out which countries need a temporary resident visa here.
